Men and women who serve their country come home every day only to find that there are limited services available. The planners in the Veterans Administration had a growing concern about available resources and the growing population of aging Veteran's. Here are some facts and statistics based on the latest census (US Census Bureau 2006-2008).
·Of those veterans 25.5% are 55 to 64 yrs old
·18.3% are 65 to 74 yrs old
·An incredible 21.2% are 75 yrs or older, compared to the overall population of 75yrs and old at
8.2%.
This graph represents the veteran aging population comparable to the civilian population in the same age groupings.
In the state of Pennsylvania:
·The population estimate is said to be around 12,760,000 in 2012.
·The estimate of the entire U.S. is roughly 313,900,000 people.
·One out of nine Americans are old, which takes up a decent amount of the American population, and is only increasing as the years go on.
·The age group of 85 and older is the most rapidly increasing age group.
·The arrival of the baby boom generation, help us estimate that people older than 85 will number 19 million in the year
2050. If this estimate is true then that will make that age group 24%
of elderly people and 5% of the entire American population.
·Mixed in this group of elderly people are veterans. There were said to be 1,007,939 veterans in the state of Pennsylvania from 2007-2011.
·There are a total of 22,215,303 in the entire U.S.
·More than 47,000 soldiers were wounded in the war against
Afghanistan and Iraq.
·90% of injured veterans recover.
But what happens to the ones who don't? Who takes care of them?
·One in five veterans come home with mental illness.
·Mainly post traumatic stress disorder.
·As of 2011, there were 1.7 million World War 2 veterans alive,and were in need of care giving assistance.
·Out of the 1.7 million veterans, only 36,076 veterans, and 38,685 spouses were granted the A&A benefit.
